Research interests

I am interested in the investigation of hydrodynamic processes in coastal areas and influence of changing water levels and sea state on the coastline. The associated topic of interest is the assessment of different types of risks connected with the sea-land interactions, especially in the prospect of climate change. As the risks are mostly relevant for the future, such studies entail consideration of various scenarios (either realistic or explicitly exaggerated) for the coastal water dynamics.
I worked on the problems of shallow water wave propagation and inundation for the tsunami waves (GITEWS project). In collaboration with the Swiss Re company I dealt with coastal floods due to storm surges and associated economical losses (CID project). Currently I am involved in the KLIMZUG-NORD project, where we construct plausible storm scenarios for the German Bight and, in particular, Elbe estuary and Hamburg area. I also attempt to assess the impact of changing global mean sea level on the local water levels, storm surge and sea state conditions. Additionally, the non-linear interactions of the mean and surge water levels with the tidal wave and possible changes in tidal cycle characteristics due to the changing local water levels are in the scope of current study.
